Cordova Iceworm Festival

Description: At the mouth of the Copper River in Southcentral Alaska, Cordova is one of the most scenic spots in the state. It is unreachable by car but well worth the short ferry or plane ride. The Iceworm Festival takes place over a period of six days in February. Participants compete in sports tournaments, bake-offs, cook-offs and brew-offs and enjoy music, arts, historic ice worm displays and events such as the iceworm tail hunt. The signature event of this festival is the popular Iceworm Parade where a long man-made ice worm is paraded through the streets like a Chinese New Year dragon dance.

Description: There is no shortage of crab at this festival but crab is not the only thing on the menu during this five-day celebration. Description: Sled dogs used to be the most practical form of travel in Alaska back in the turn of the 20th century. The official state sport of Alaska is still very much alive around the state thanks to an active dog-mushing community and events such as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Teams from around the world travel to Alaska each March to participate in the 1,150-mile dog-mushing race from Willow to Nome, a town steeped in Gold Rush history. The population of Nome grows by more than 1,000 people during the biggest party of the year to honor the victors of the Last Great Race. Winter visitors to Alaska can watch the ceremonial start in Anchorage followed by the official start the following day in Willow and then make their way north to Nome, seven or eight days later, to welcome the first-place musher and his winning team.

Description: Two-and-a-half hours south of Anchorage, at the end of the Seward Highway, is one of the most anticipated and unique Fourth of July events in Alaska. Seward celebrates the Birthday of the USA with the famous Mount Marathon race where fearless, toned mountain runners scurry up to the mountain\'s peak and then back down, more often than not arriving at the finish line with scrapes and bruises adorning their legs. During the festival, visitors can take in the views of Resurrection Bay while sampling reindeer corndogs, pizza, homemade pies and music all along Fourth Avenue. Events kick off with a waterfront fireworks display at Midnight on Fourth of July and continue in the morning with community gatherings, contests, games and more. If you plan to stay overnight, be sure to book your room early as hotel and campgrounds fill up quickly around that day.

Description: The BP Ice Art Championship in Fairbanks is the largest ice art competition and exhibition in the world, and has been hosted by the Golden Heart City city since 1990.
